Lead heads are fished by tying directly to your main line, hit bottom and retrieve in the same manner as fishing a redgill, resist striking as you feel the lure being plucked, continue retrieve and wind into the fish, once hooked pump fish carefully to avoid tearing a hole in the fishes mouth,<I have seen a few drop off just prior to netting by over keen bullying>On mid channel wrecks in excess of 180 feet the general rule for Cod and Ling is up to 20 turns from the bottom, but for Pollock and Coalfish up to 40 turns are required.Darker colours work well in deeper water, whilst the lighter colours are my preferred choice for Bass on inshore wrecks and reefs in shallower water.Add weight above the lure in faster current, your lure should be fished directly below your rod tip for the best action, this also helps to avoid tangles with your fellow crew members, these lures account for many of our best fish every season, fished properly they are deadly for all predatory species, even Turbot in the wrecks scour will readily take. The key to success is water visibility for lure fishing,if your out on such a day give them a try and I know they will become a prefered method for light tackle enthusiasts.
These lures are available in 2 and 4oz sizes in most colours, the price is £2.00 per pkt, or £3.50 for 2pkts.
They fish well as an alternative to redgills or shads, mainly on the drift whilst wrecking, but I have also had plenty of Bass on them over reefs. Each packet contains both a twintail and a monotail lure, tied directly to the main line ,eliminates any chance of a tangle, hook facing upwards results in less snags on the wrecks superstructure.
